HealthInsurance
Health insurance is mandatory in Germany – from day one. The right option depends on your job, income, family and how long you plan to stay. We explain the differences clearly and in your language.

Public, private or both?
The main routes – and who they suit.

Three questions that decide everything.
How am I employed?
Employee, self-employed, civil servant or professional athlete – this determines which insurance is open to you.
How long am I staying?
A short stay calls for different solutions than a permanent move to Germany.
Who's coming with me?
Depending on the system, partners and children can be covered with you – or need their own policy.

Yes. Anyone living in Germany must have health insurance – public or private. Gaps in cover can lead to back payments, so you should be insured from day one.
Only once your income exceeds the annual compulsory insurance threshold (Versicherungspflichtgrenze). The self-employed and civil servants can choose regardless of income.
With public health insurance, spouses and children without their own income can be covered free of charge, subject to certain conditions. With private insurance, every person needs their own policy.
That depends on the country and the policy. For permanent residence in Germany it is usually not sufficient. We'll review your policy together.
Only under certain conditions, and it's often difficult. That's why the decision to go private needs careful thought and good advice.
